I'm doing laundry. I just realized that the blanket in the washer right now is one I've had almost my entire life -- I think we got it when I was about 10, and got my first brand-new bed. I took it to college with me. When I practically lived with my boyfriend in college, it went with me to his place and kept us both warm. When I moved out on my own, it, of course, came along.

It's a twin-sized blanket, and we don't even own a twin-sized bed, but I keep it and from time to time it gets used for one thing or another. Most recently, my brother used it when he came to visit and slept on an air mattress. That's why it's getting washed today.

Do you have something that you keep, that keeps you? What is it?

I was given a blanket when I was born, made by my aunt. She made similar blankets for my cousins (her daughters) and my sister, but I was the only one who kept mine as a "blankie."

I slept with the blanket as a child, and then we had on and off years. My youngest sister inherited it for a little while, and then I took it back. It resided on my bed until the day Linus was born, actually. I just decided that it's finally time for it to go into the keepsakes box in storage.

As a sidenote, the same aunt and one of my cousins made a similar blanket for Linus when he was born. I suppose it would be hard to be named Linus and NOT have a blankie. :)

I thought you were going to say that Linus inherited your blankie!

How do you feel about it being in storage now? Do you ever glance at the bed and have to remind yourself that it's put away, or has it not even crossed your mind?

I would have given it to him, but it's so threadbare it can hardly be called a blanket anymore. I'm surprised I don't miss it. I had planned on "archiving" it when I got married and became a Real Grown Up, but at the time I couldn't bring myself to do it.

You probably don't miss it because there's so much new in your life!

Marriage was a grown-up thing, but becoming a parent feels more grown-up than anything ever before.

PS - I think it's wonderful that they made one for Linus, too!

I have a Woody Woodpecker doll. It started life belonging to my best friend, who was born a year before I was (1962) and judging by the date on the tag, must have been bought for my friend right when he was born. I fell in love with Woody when we were both around six or seven, and I started asking if I could bring him over for sleepovers...even made him his own little bed and everything. My friend was never all that fond of Woody, so one day when his mom and dad had a garage sale, they sold Woody and I bought him. I've had him ever since. He used to talk, but his voice box broke about twenty years ago. And a few years ago, some loving friends found an identical (but unfortunately, also nonspeaking) Woody and bought it for me. So now I have two and I keep them as avatars of cheerfulness. :)

What a great story, it made me grin from ear to ear! :-)

I don't think many people would say that they actually bought that thing they've carried with them since childhood, and I love that you made a bed for him.

Thanks!
