So It's been almost 3 weeks since I've gotten to work on my (presumably midgrade) story. Which I kind of lost interest in over that time. I made some notes on a picture book earlier this week, and idea I've had kicking around for several months now and would like to play with.  I have time today, so I was really looking forward to messing with one or both of those today after I ran a couple of errands this morning. Wouldn't you know it, on the way home something new and very very different hit me in the head.

So now I'm working on an adult novel set in a near-future dystopia and my main character is a 33 year old man.

This should be interesting.

Edit:

I know some of you out there write more than one thing at a time. I really want to be that way. But if that's going to happen, I'm going to have to find more than 2-3 hours every ten days to write. Where does time come from?

But you are writing more than one thing at a time! You can only physically type one story at a time, and while you're working on one, the others are resting.

Yeah. It's the "time" thing that's breaking my heart. I so want to be writing every day. I've got to find a way. Even if it's only 15 minutes, like Laurie Halse Anderson says.

You can do it--that 15 minute thing Laurie Halse Anderson does really helps. I started doing it the first summer she did it and that's really what helped me make the daily commitment I needed to make. Now, although I don't write on my two teaching days, I write every other day of the week.

Plus, as Jenn said, you are writing more than one thing at a time. It does help to have more than one project in some stage, so that if you get bogged down on one, you can work on another.

You'll figure it out. Because you want to.

Thanks, Katherine. I do want to. I feel unwell when I go more than a couple of days without writing. I have to remember that when I start making excuses that I don't have "enough" time. Every little bit helps.

I can't even quilt and write on the same day. It's apparently one or the other.

:-( They must use the same muscles. Or the same space on the clock, at least.

Same space in the brain for me. Same space that does calculus and chemistry and makes me dream about it too.

I get it. It used to be that these things grew stronger and more flexible with use. Now it seems they get used up with use, and need time to be replenished.
