Of course, the hot spot that produced them was last seen under Yellowstone Park... so we probably won't have another couple thousand cubic miles of Lava pouring out any time soon.

Date: 2006-08-12 07:37 pm (UTC)If you look at a map of Yellowstone, it has that big lake. That is actually a collapsed Caldera of that mega volcano. When it exploded, it was one of the biggest eruptions ever.
Anyway, that isn't directly related to our current volcanism. Our current volcanism comes from plate tectonics, and that is believed to be related to a wandering "hot spot", a hot place in the mantle that heats up the crust that floats above it. Also responsible for the Columbia River Basalts.
