Maggie started the day with a tummyache because Mama ate pizza with onion, garlic, and hot chilies last night. Oops. After complaining, Maggie slept. A lot. She slept through lunch. Then she went to the doctor for a checkup, where the nurse pulled off her umbilical stump. I'm so glad to be rid of that little thing. I was always worried about it, and it was kinda gross looking. I have to say that when Maggie was born I was a little stunned at how beautiful the actual umbilical cord was. I hadn't expected that, but it was incredibly symmetrical, not at all the lumpy irregular shape I expected. But then it was cut, and the strange little stump remained, occasionally catching on her clothing and leaving a tiny spot of blood on her diaper or her clothes. I showed the nurse that it was hanging by a thread, and she plucked it right off. "Want to keep it?" she said. Um. No, thanks. Part of me wished I wasn't so grossed out by it, so I could keep it, but mostly I was just glad it was gone.

Now we can put cuter clothes on the baby. We've been limiting her to t-shirts, pretty much.

They also did a blood test at the doctor's office, and told us that Maggie is almost back to her birth weight. (That's a good thing, as new babies lose a bit of weight the first few days.) Go, Maggie!

Then she slept. She slept through dinner. She slept through her first walk through the neighborhood. Then, suddenly, she woke. She wanted to eat. So, she ate.

Babies' days are much like this, or so I hear. We only have 11 days so far to go on, so I'm no expert. Now she's being held by her grandma. They're making faces at each other.

Tomorrow I'll try to post a short version of the birth story I've been working on.

She's BEAUTIFUL. Absolutely gorgeous. You must snarfle her tummy and neck for me, and... well, I'm sure you're already adoring her in all the appropriate ways.

I hope the mom is doing well too. Hang in there guys!

Awww... look at the cutie...

And yes, eating and sleeping (and pooping) is going to be all there is for her to do in the next few months.

Same for you. Except for the sleeping part :)
