Last night while dh watched "24," I rested on our bed reading The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth, by Sheila Kitzinger, an excellent book, albeit a little queasiness-inspiring for its excellence. I can't recommend it highly enough to anyone having a baby, or interested in the pregnancy and birth processes. It's the first book I've encountered that even tries to describe what a contraction feels like without resorting to a comparison to menstrual cramping.

When I decided I had had enough, I came downstairs to say goodnight to Eric. The cat was acting a little funny in the front corner of the living room, where she usually likes to hang out on the back of a chair and look out the window. She was on the floor in front of the chair, staring like she'd seen a bug and was looking for it to reappear. I approached her quietly and started to look for a bug. We've seen a lot of silverfish in the house lately, so I figured one of those was squiggling away on the carpet someplace.

As I approaced her, I heard a sound a little like rain ticking against the window. But different. I went to the window and looked outside. It wasn't raining. I bent down to the windowsill. The ticking sound, I now realized, was accompanied by a very subtle rustling sound. My first thought -- termites. I listened. Maybe it's a very quiet mouse? Which is worse, termites or mice? Termites, I decided. I called Eric into the room. He heard it, too. He knocked on the wall. No change. Not a mouse, we decided.

Now I have to call some bug companies.

Oh, the joys of homeownership.

I've talked to several exterminators, they are all suggesting carpenter ants, which apparently can be heard under the right conditions. Some people are coming out to inspect tomorrow. Better than termites, but still not good.

I've left the book upstairs, so I can't quote from it exactly, but I remember one of the things she said about a contraction was that it was like fire. Or possibly heat. I'll have to bring it down and quote from it sometime soon.
