I've talked to several exterminators, they are all suggesting carpenter ants, which apparently can be heard under the right conditions. Some people are coming out to inspect tomorrow. Better than termites, but still not good.
I've left the book upstairs, so I can't quote from it exactly, but I remember one of the things she said about a contraction was that it was like fire. Or possibly heat. I'll have to bring it down and quote from it sometime soon.
