Where to begin? It's craziness here. The trip back to Ohio and Indiana was nice, relaxing, and gut-busting, thanks to the fine cooking skills of my Mother-in-Law. We've been back since Tuesday afternoon. The return trip was a bit of an adventure, as I woke up hideously sick to my stomach at about 3:30 am that morning. Our flight left Columbus at 9:20, and I finally started feeling somewhat human again toward the end of the first leg. Landed in Minneapolis, found the gate for our flight to Portland, fed the baby and ran into [livejournal.com profile] hhw on her way back from WisCon. We chatted only briefly, though she was gracious enough to keep an eye on [livejournal.com profile] dampbaby for me for a minute while I cleaned up baby food mess. I'd hoped to chat more with [livejournal.com profile] hhw on the plane, but Maggie (aka [livejournal.com profile] dampbaby) was in a mood and therefore high-maintenance for most of the 3-1/2 hour flight, and during the short time she fell asleep I decided to try to get some rest, too.

Wednesday we got the keys to the new house. We noticed during our walk-through that the garage reeked of the two dogs that had lived there (yes, in the garage), and that one of the rooms desperately needed paint, but that otherwise all seemed good. Thursday we got the carpets cleaned and I started cleaning out the kitchen cabinets and drawers. Big kitchen, big job. I'm still only half finished. We also bought some stuff at Petco to spray in the garage to try to get the dog smell down. It did nothing. Friday I went for the big guns -- damped down the floor with a bucket of water (don't have a hose there yet) and poured full-strength bleach on it, then scrubbed with a stiff broom. Two hours and half a gallon of bleach later, the garage was smelling much better. After everything dried I could see where I failed to scrub sufficiently, thus explaining why the odor was not completely gone. God only knows when I'll get to finish the job, but I'd like to do it soon. Meanwhile, Eric painted the room that needed it. In the afternoon, he continued painting while I did errands (including buying more paint and bringing home lunch) and then cleaned more kitchen cabinets.

Today we went out and bought our washer and dryer for the new house. I've been wanting a new washer and dryer for years, so I refuse to take the ones we have to the new house. Also, I think they would break if they got moved at this point, since they're 10 years old. We bought a Frigidaire front-loader washer and a KitchenAid dryer. We saved nearly $300 by not buying the matched set. I asked the sales guy about the difference between two Frigidaire models, and he couldn't come up with anything to justify the $300 difference between the two, so we went for the lower-priced one. The only thing I'm concerned about is that it may be noisy. I guess we'll find out. So, with the $600 we didn't spend on the washer and dryer, we bought an extended service agreement for the washer and a $500 refrigerator to go in the garage. I've been wanting a second fridge for a long time, so this is an exciting purchase. I'm planning to stockpile food like the apocalypse is nigh. Or at least make sure there's always beer and wine chilled. I'd like to get that garage cleaned up before the fridge goes into it on Wednesday, but I'm not sure I'll have a good chance to do so between now and then.

Also today, we had a babysitter come play with Maggie for a while so we could transport breakables and photos to the new house. The movers come on Monday and Tuesday, but we were advised to move certain things ourselves, so we tried to do most of that today. There's still more, of course. Computers, stereo equipment, and I suppose I'll find a few more things floating around as we begin the upheaval. We'll get more over tomorrow, and take Maggie to see her new room, which is already done up beautifully for a little girl. It's also on the north side of the house instead of the south. It's probably too much to ask, but I'm hoping she'll sleep in a little later in the mornings without that southern exposure.

Oh, and we got bills in today's mail for the two new mortgage payments we have coming due July 1st. Whee.

I suppose since I posted this on Saturday night no-one will actually see it, but I'm glad I finally got a post in anyway. We're exhausted but excited. Oh, and if you do happen to read this, please be aware that we'll be offline from Monday night til Thursday afternoon.
