"Not it!"
"Not it!"
"Notitnotitnotit!"
A herd of children shouted and raced around the kitchen table, while in the background the kitchen quietly smelled of chicken soup and buttermilk biscuits. Mandy, the smallest child, was "it." She was also tired, and began to whimper. "I'm always 'it,'" she whined and stamped her feet as tears filled her eyes and spilled down her chubby red cheeks.
Mama's voice rose above the clatter, "who will help me taste the cookies?" she said, and five pairs of feet about-faced to the kitchen, five grubby pairs of hands grabbed toward Mama, five voices called "me! me! I will! I will!" and one little voice wailed a wordless siren call. Before anyone knew it, Mama scooped Mandy high in the air and tickled her tummy, surprising the toddler out of her rage and into reluctant giggles. Next thing anyone knew, Mandy had a cookie half in, half out of her mouth and Mama was doling out cookies to the rest.
