It's almost astonishing how deeply I still miss my Granny, nearly 5 years after she died, more than 10 years since I last spent any quality time with her.  Strange that now, at the age of 40 and upon finally having a baby of my own, I have whole new sets of questions I want to ask her.  How do you make jelly?  How do you grow beets?  Why don't I have the energy you did?

I wish she could see Maggie.  Maggie reminds me of Granny, and has from the beginning.  My brother mentioned it, too, the first time he met Maggie.  I joked maybe that was just because neither of them had teeth, but I didn't disagree that Granny is there in my daughter.

Ditto. More than twenty years.

"How do you get your garden to grow so well?" "How do you make those clothespin hollyhock dolls?" "Isn't my kid gorgeous?"

Wow. Amazing, isn't it? How someone can be with you and not with you at once, and forever.
