Still working on it. It's looking less and less like a virus, more like a hardware problem -- maybe the hard drive, maybe the motherboard. Eric's still trying to figure it out.

If the hard drive itself is not corrupted physically (or the partition table messed up etc.), but only the operating system is screwed up, you can still get the other stuff. Boot with a floppy, or take out the hard drive and put it as a secondary one into another computer (and then copy what you need onto the primary hard drive).

Well, it's all gone now. I decided to try re-installing WinXP after I saved what I could. I managed to re-format the partition, but XP is failing to reinstall. We don't know why.

Meanwhile, on the laptop, I've downloaded Quicken 2006 and it's refusing to work. I'm ready to convert to Luddite-ism. This sucks.
