Could use some advice

I'm impatiently waiting for this kid, now.  I'm uncomfortable a lot of the time, as in, it's uncomfortable to move around much, be in the car with a seatbelt on (and god knows I'm not gonna be in there with it off), bend, lift, and even sometimes just sit.  However, this kid could still be in utero for as long as another 5 weeks (ugh, I hope not!)  So, I need some suggestions for passing the time as comfortably as possible without going nutso from boredom, which is what is happening today.

i read lots of books that late in the pregnancy. it was the only thing that took my mind off how uncomfortable i was. even now, when i hurt badly and i CAN rest, i read. and when i'm depressed...nothing better than taking your mind off your own (perceived) problems and reading about someone else's! : )

My standard pass-time would be self-pleasure, but I guess that's out. I think this is the time to start on that book you have always wanted to read but intimidated you, like Salman Rushdie's "The Satanic Verses". Dino suggests "Posession" by A.S. Byatt.

Nobody expects much of you at this stage (or should) so you can devote yourself to a thick tome. And then, I am sorry to mention it, there's always crafts like crocheting and knitting. Seriously. Practitioners tell me it is so soothing.

Am I suggesting totally innapropriate things?

With this last baby, I had a really hard time focusing on anything, so I'd pick up a book and find myself reading the same paragraph over and over, or start watching tv and wander away during a commercial break. But with the previous ones, I was getting big at this time of year, and I took a lot of cool baths to help me stay comfortable. I also watched a lot of movies, especially chick flicks like mindless romantic comedies. Indulge in all the guilty pleasures that your husband isn't interested in. Magazines are good, too, since you can just randomly flip through them.

Most of all, you should sleep and otherwise rest as much as you can. When you look back on this time, it will be like a blur.

I don't know if it would be helpful to you, but I walked a lot the last part of my pregnancies. Movement helped me feel better, and there's always lots to look at when you get out and about. And it's cheap entertainment, as well.

I don't know why I didn't think of reading or movie-watching. I was in a bad place earlier today. Feeling better now, and yeah, reading a trashy novel sounds great, at least for an hour or so before sitting gets uncomfortable. I may make a trip to Barnes & Noble in the morning.

If not for the pregnancy, people would probably tell me I haven't changed since high school, too. Oh, well. At least we're not weathered old broads!

Hee. Self-pleasure has been too awkward to be pleasurable for quite some time now. Self-frustration may be more like it.

I don't really see myself being happy knitting or crocheting. I tried that stuff in fourth grade. Didn't get much out of it then, don't expect I would now either. But burying myself in a good book, that could be pretty satisfying. I haven't given myself permission to do that in a long long time.

I also wonder if trying to write a novella might be a good idea. I think Ray Bradbury wrote Fahrenheit 451 in about a month. Maybe I could come up with something....

Sleep I'm very good at. I only have trouble when the cat wakes me up, or my hip starts to ache from laying on one side too long. I like the cool bath idea, too. And goofy girly movies from Blockbuster. Can't believe I never thought of that! If only I could get the TV into the bathroom so I could soak while watching. Ahhhh!

I actually found myself thinking earlier today that maybe I hurt because I haven't been moving enough. Hubby and I try to get out to walk each evening, but I skipped it last night due to the mugginess. I'll try to remember to make myself move more, maybe a morning walk or some yoga stretches, at least. Zoe's seen my neighborhood, she can tell you how boring it is.

i enjoyed self-pleasure quite a bit during my pregnancies too! forgot to suggest that. but that late, it can be difficult for your arm (probably impossible) to reach all the way around your belly. i also took up crocheting. and like everyone else, i never finished that baby blanket i started 4 years ago... ; )

Crumbs, I'm feeling bloated and bored and I'm not even pregnant. A tv in the bathroom sounds truly decadent! Cool baths and movies--that's the ticket. A friend who teaches college writing was telling me about a mother who wrote a paper for her daughter (the daughter asked her for some help, but didn't realize her mother wrote the whole thing--bizarre, I know) so maybe you could get started on that...

you could've had them at 45...so it could be worse. ; ) my mom had my half-sister when she was 37 and i was 14. a friend of mine's mom had my friend's half-sister when she (my friend) was 18! talk about thinking you're almost through and then POP goes your bubble! so now my friend's mom, who's in her late 30s with a daughter a year or so older than my oldest, talk more than her daughter (who is my age but has no children) and i do!

oh yeah, a glider would be very comfortable. get lots of cushions for it. my mom wanted to buy me one with my first pregnancy (because i was 18 and didn't even have a job), but they were so expensive i refused. now i wish i'd taken her up on the offer because they're so comfy. the motion is so fluid...hence the name "glider". : )

Well, I picked up a copy of Possession today. The trouble with pregnancy is it turns the brain kinda numb. Causes you to do things like discover how cuuuute every baby in the world is, and get teary over Wal-Mart commercials, but forget which key opens your car. So, we'll see if I can get through the book or not. It looks excellent, though.

I think you should just try to go about your normal business. That's what I did, or think I did, five years ago when my child was two weeks overdue, but it was the dead of winter and much easier to bear. Do not, I repeat, do not watch the movie "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" or you may end up stuck on the sofa blubbering because you're sure you're never going to get your groove back, if, in fact, you had a groove in the first place.
