Anyway, the most surprising film I've seen in the last year is Bad Santa. A friend said he heard that it had "no redeeming qualities," which really made me want to see it. What surprised me was how much redemption ultimately existed, and how compelling a character who seems lacking in any redemptive qualities can be, when written and played well.
Also, Tripletts of Belleville--characters who manage complexity and depth without saying a word.
