Sigh, y'all

 I'm seeing mass exodus to Dreamwidth.  Trying to figure out how to manage my relationships both here and there, when I've had enough trouble maintaining them just here.  Any thoughts are welcomed.

I feel your pain. For me, LJ isn't worth paying for anymore because my friends tend to have drifted elsewhere (like Facebook). I distrust LJ's privacy policy, now that it is bedding down with the notorious privacy pirate. It generally feels like a sad place to me these days.

You were toying with the notion of abandoning LJ, too, right? Just not leaving for someone else. So, you could set up a DW account and abandon them both in one big farewell! :oD

LJ has felt like a sad place for a while now, is DW any better? I actually have been name-squatting there for quite a while, but I haven't even visited the site in months, maybe over a year even.

I'm no longer all that familiar with LJs policies because I spend so little time here, but these Facebook and Twitter icons freak me out and I've seen several of my friends post their own concerns about privacy. I don't really want to abandon LJ, but on the other hand I'm not sure how or even whether it fits into my life right now, so I guess I'll play around with LJ and DW as I have the opportunity, and let the circumstances make the decision for me.

I expect to be here a good bit more for the next 8-10 weeks because I've got a group that shares their writing milestones here between mid-Sept and the end of November, and I'll be writing and checking in with them. The rest will be revealed in time, I guess.

I'm not sure it's better yet. Maybe it won't be at either place for a while. I don't think I'm going to delete my account here, not now. Your philosophy seems sound, and I may let things fall into the place they should be without being extremely proactive about it.

In the past, when things have gotten slow around here it's been an impetus for me to scout out friends of friends and "meet" new people, but it feels more profound than "slow" this time. Does that make any sense? Like my friends are gone, and they ain't comin' back this time.

Oh, even if I were to migrate there, I'd still have my account here. I can't imagine deleting it. But, come to think of it, I should back it up....

What you say makes sense to me. It's harder to meet people here now, and the ones I met years ago have moved on. Maybe it's like graduating from college or moving on from a job -- just another normal adjustment that happens sometimes.

I've seen people go to WordPress and Blogger, but very few to Dreamwidth.

Do I need to set up a new account and learn the ins and outs of a whole new system? No, I do not. I have a life to live. So I'll be here at LJ for a long time yet.

:-) I think a lot of people go to DW because it is set up so much like Livejournal. Few of us want to go through a steep learning curve again for our blogs.

I can't put my finger on why, but I distrust Blogger a lot. Also I don't like their comment format.

What I love about LJ is the sense of community that developed here. Six years ago, five years ago, it was an amazing place to meet people. I don't get that these days, but on the other hand I don't need it in that way right now, so I'm content. But I hate to see so many old buddies going someplace new.

in reference to liking or not liking your blog site... i have a blog on blogger... the reason i do is because it is easy. i'm not that computer saavy. people complain about the comment section.... but i don't like this one either... i don't like being anonymous... i don't want to go through facebook...don't have a clue about open id... i hear its bad form to leave your blog address on someone else's blog... so ow do you know who i am?

Oh, hi! I have a tough choice to make that day, choosing between the Greg Robinson opening and a reading at Powell's by some friends of mine. I'm probably going to opt for the reading, since I have a personal connection.

I don't consider it bad form at all to leave your blog link on a comment, as long as you have left a meaningful comment and it's obvious that you're not just fishing for visitors. If all you've said is "great post, I totally agree!!!!" well, then it's bad form.

I think OpenID is pretty easy, too. The problem I have with it is I set up an identity there and didn't bother to remember my password.
