dampscribbler: (bitch plz)
The first Independent 'Zine I ever got, and frankly one of a very few, was Maximum Rock N Roll (damn I wish I still had those old newsprint copies) back in the mid- and late- 1980's. It turned me on to what Independent Press could say and do. Some of it was really weird, some of it quite dubious, and some of it was positively mind-blowing. Later I would get Ms. Magazine during some of its ad-free years, and these days I'm liking Hip Mama and the minimally ad-supported Brain, Child Magazine.

Bitch Magazine is one that I came across many times in my late twenties and early thirties, but was a little scared of. I mean, wow, the B word on the cover of a magazine? How angry are they? Do they have no self-respect? How will I be perceived if I'm seen buying one, or reading one?

Yeah, I sat at the front of the class in school, too. I'm one of those.

The older I've gotten, the more I've cared about truth, less so about perception, except maybe as an academic counterpart to truth. So I have actually read a few issues of Bitch, and been deeply impressed by what I've seen. I've even considered subscribing, although there was a little of that "what will the postman think" going through my head until yesterday when I suddenly found myself thinking "why the heck haven't I ever subscribed?" (Okay, there's also the issue of living with an infant/toddler/preschooler to consider, as in I HAVE NO TIME TO READ!) So when I checked my Friends page today and saw that they were in trouble, as in possibly no more print issues if they don't raise some money in the next 30 days, my breath kind of caught in my chest. Dammit I hate to see that happen. But I'm in a position to do something about it. I made my donation, bought a few back issues I'd like to see (and cursed my luck to discover that a few others I'd like to see are sold out) and now I'm passing the word along to you. If you're reading this and respect what ad-free independent publications are trying to do, click on the banner below, make a donation, even $10 or $15 will help, and buy a back issue or two to find out what the good stuff is all about.

And come back to this post in a few days and watch the wiener get longer. Heh.

Thanks.
