Since Maggie came along I don't have nearly as much time to talk to my mother (or anyone else, for that matter) as I once did. I rang her this morning to ask if she was having trouble sending me emails (apparently some people are) and she excitedly jumped right into conversation. Unfortunately, she and I now have different definitions of what makes interesting conversations. By a lot. While I'd be perfectly happy to chat with her about the loss of Wendy Wasserstein, Coretta Scott King, and Betty Freidan, Mom wanted to talk about her cat's bloody stool and the pluses and minuses of paying for an online subscription to Barron's. Plenty of my life is taken up with that kind of stuff already. Let's talk about something that takes place in the rest of the world!

I need to get out of the house more.

I should have known you of all people would be begging for more details. Would you like to call her yourself, I'm sure she'd be happy to regale you with the latest stories of trips to the vet and the search for the perfect cat food.

Please. I have enough of these troubles at home right now. My cat cost 785 dollars in cat hospital fees because he decided he liked other food better.

What other kind of food leads to $785 hospital fees?

You have my sympathy, and so does your cat.
