I just returned from a Literary Arts lecture given by Elizabeth Strout, who spoke at (delightful) length about being a white, uptight New England writer.  She was terrifically amusing as well as deeply insightful, and I'm very glad I had the ticket and went to see her even though I've never read any of her books.  Yet.

Also at the event, the finalists for the Oregon Book Awards were announced, and among them was [livejournal.com profile] lkmadigan , for her first novel "Flash Burnout," which won the 2010 William C. Morris award.  I'm thrilled to pieces for her, and cursed my lack of smartphone at the event, which would have allowed me to tweet immediately my "inside scoop" on her nomination.  Oh yeah, and other peoples', too. :-)  I'll post a link to the full shortlist when it's available tomorrow.  It's late and I'm tired and need to sleep on all I took in tonight.

G'night.

Actually, they didn't announce the names individually, there are so many nominees in so many categories that it would have taken a long time. They did announce the fellowship winners, I think there were 6. The "announcement" of the nominees was in the middle of the program, and on a table in the lobby. I wish I'd thought to grab a couple extra programs. I'll ask today if there are extras. I read the list in the lobby and was thrilled for her. :)

Elizabeth Strout was great to hear, she gave me a few things to think about. I'm sorry you couldn't make it, but I hope you have a great writing weekend.

It was a wonderful event, I was so glad to have gone. I haven't read anything by Strout yet but I'm looking forward to it.
